Synaptic Scholars

Synaptic Scholars creates a framework for fully realizing intellectual juxtapositions, critical thinking, and self-directed explorations. As mentors and leaders with eclectic passions, the Scholars create an intimate and supportive community in which to pursue projects, take intellectual risks, and reflect their learning off their peers of other academic disciplines and classes. The program is designed to cultivate a strong sense of personal responsibility while encouraging scholars to enrich the University’s intellectual life.

The Synaptic Scholars program enables students to realize their potential in intensive, creative, interdisciplinary ways. After being accepted into the program at the end of their freshman years, Scholars approach selected faculty and other mentors to develop immersive and rigorous internships, research initiatives, and projects that often fuse seemingly divergent interests over their remaining three years at Tufts. Scholars are linked with resources necessary to fully pursue their learning experiences. Scholars meet weekly on Thursday evenings to discuss a broad range of current events and global issues, organize community events, offer feedback and support for individual and group projects, and reflect on their evolving intellectual interests and personal goals.

Please read more about past Synaptic Scholars activities at the IGL Archives.

Synaptic Scholars uses an annual application process to create its new class during the spring semester. This ensures that new Scholars embody the program's ideals of intellectual curiosity and zeal, desire to self-actualize, and fidelity to the community. If you might consider applying, please be attentive to notices on these pages and around campus of General Interest Meetings and application materials at the beginning of the Spring semester of your freshman year. While applications require effort on your and the Scholars' part, we invite you to see in this process an opportunity to push your self-understanding and let your story inspire your peers.
