Global Perspectives on Race, Justice and Equity

The Institute for Global Leadership and The Fletcher School announced the launch of the Conversation Series “Global Perspectives on Race, Justice and Equity.” The Series features policymakers, public intellectuals, scholars, writers and activists on issues of race, justice and equity.

The brutal killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis sparked global protests against systemic racism in the United States and around the world. The Covid-19 pandemic has also highlighted the racial disparities in health with disproportionately high death rates among African Americans and other minorities. Racial discrimination is deeply embedded in the political, economic and social structures of many societies.

The Series aims to contribute to the long-overdue national and global conversation about historical and persistent racial injustice and inequality. The dialogue on these vital issues challenges everyone to take action to address the long and destructive legacy of racism, and promote a more just and equitable world for all.

The Conversation Series aims to advance the Institute’s mission to educate new generations of effective and ethical leaders who are able to understand the world’s most challenging problems. The Fletcher School is committed to educating leaders to further a legacy of enacting lasting and meaningful change in the world.

The inaugural speaker in the Series was The Rt. Hon. David Lammy MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Justice in new Labour leader Keir Starmer’s Shadow Cabinet in the U.K. The Virtual Conversation took place on Friday, July 24, 2020. He addressed the topic “Black Lives Matter, Justice and the UK”.

It was moderated by Professor Abi Williams, Director of IGL and Professor of the Practice of International Politics at The Fletcher School.
