Over the past year, three laws in India aiming to regulate agricultural markets have incited the biggest protests in the world, led by the farmers that these laws affect. On November 29, 2021, India’s parliament passed a bill to repeal these laws, marking a major turning point in the sustained actions that have occurred over the last year.

The South Asian Regional Committee is an academic discourse and research group under the Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts University. From John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan in Dostana to the dean Rishi Kapur plays in Student of the Year, queer representation in Bollywood has most often been for comedic value. The film industry seems to profit off of the presentation of homosexuality in a way convenient to them. While new TV shows such as Made in Heaven and Sacred Games shift away from these stereotypes, what will it take for the mainstream Bollywood industry to change its ways?

South Asian Climate Conference

The 2021 Climate Change Conference on February 19th and 20th, hosted by the Tufts South Asian Regional Committee (SARC), will feature four panels that each address the various challenges that climate change poses to the subcontinent. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are amongst the countries worst affected by the climate crisis. Rising sea levels have displaced thousands of people in West Bengal and Bangladesh, while a shortage of freshwater has led to a diplomatic crisis between India and Pakistan.

Hathras: Caste-Based Sexual Violence and the Dalit Feminist Movement with Kiruba Munusamy

You might have heard about the brutal gang rape of a 19 year old Dalit girl by 4 upper-caste ‘Thakur’ men in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh late last month. She was found lying barely conscious, naked, badly battered and bruised in a field next to her home in Hathras. For the next two weeks, she fought for her life. But on the morning of 29th September, she died from the injuries sustained during the rape.
