New Initiative for Middle East Peace

The New Initiative for Middle East Peace (NIMEP) is a collaborative dialogue and research group studying the Middle East. Through a yearly research trip, weekly dialogues, and on-campus events that culminate with the publication of its NIMEP Insights journal, NIMEP fosters greater understanding of and comprehensive engagement with the Middle East.

NIMEP is a non-polemical student think-tank and outreach initiative devoted to finding progressive solutions to historic and emerging conflicts in the Middle East. NIMEP provides a forum for producing dialogue, scholarship, and nuanced explorations of the region. This initiative is designed to cultivate future leaders and to inspire students to realize the powerful results of its multi-perspectival model of thinking and acting.

NIMEP students publish their research in the journal NIMEP Insights with essays by other Tufts undergraduate and graduate students studying the Middle East and North Africa region. Each volume of Insights is the culmination of months of research and preparation, carefully planned and executed fact-finding missions abroad, and immense dedication to discourse and learning on behalf of NIMEP’s members and supporters, who include Tufts faculty members, foreign government officials, and former IGL students working in the field.

In 2005, the Institute for Global Leadership published the inaugural edition of NIMEP Insights featuring student research papers from NIMEP trips to Israel and the West Bank, Egypt, and the IGL's 2004 trip to Iran. In 2006 it published Vol. II based on the group's fact-finding missions to Turkey and Egypt as well as individual research trips to Belgium, Iran, Israel and the West Bank, and the United Arab Emirates. Vol. III (2007) followed NIMEP's fact-finding mission to Lebanon and includes contributions from researchers in Israel, Jordan, and Washington DC. Vol. IV (2009) features essays from NIMEP's fact-finding mission to Syria as well as primary research conducted in Israel, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. Vol. V (2010) features essays based on NIMEP's fact-finding mission to Israel and the West Bank focusing on the question of Arab-Israeli peace. Vol. VI (2011) features essays from NIMEP's fact-finding mission to Iraqi Kurdistan, examining issues from paramilitary forces to oil, the status of Kirkuk, women, and healthcare. NIMEP's 2012 fact-finding mission to Tunisia is the feature of Vol. VII of Insights
