After one year, the BUILD-Santa Anita Community Development Plan is finally being put in to action. BUILD is sponsoring and conducting more than a dozen projects in the community, some in conjunction with partner NGO, FUNDAP.

Ten BUILD students, a group comprised of members from both the 2008 and 2009 teams, will spend one month in Santa Anita conducting a large-scale socioeconomic diagnostic, constructing the 25,000 plant-capacity seed nursery, and teaching introductory computer classes, among other projects.

BUILD Guatemala March 2009 Trip

In March 2009, BUILD sent a team of 14 students to its current partner community, Santa Anita la Union, a 160-person fair trade, organic coffee and banana cooperative located in Quetzaltenango. BUILD spent eight days in the community, allowing a new groups of students to conduct individual research, and granting team leaders enough time to further plans for more than a dozen projects involving BUILD, Santa Anita, and local NGO FUNDAP.

BUILD wins Davis 100 Projects for Peace competition!

On Friday, February 6, BUILD was informed that it's application had been selected for the 100 Projects for Peace Prize of Tufts University. Prize winners receive $10,000 towards a project designed to promote Peace. The Projects for Peace Website describes the mission of the contest:

All students, upon acceptance into the BUILD Program, are required to formulate a research question which they will seek to answer through their research conducted in the Program location. This academic element of the BUILD Program is relatively new, having begun in 2008, with the Program's first trip to Guatemala. Before the trip, BUILD students submit 15-page research reviews which are expanded upon return. Thus far, topics have ranged from sexual health care in indigenous Guatemala to the political ideologies of the URNG guerrilla groups.

The Community Development Plan (CDP) is the result of the research conducted by the BUILD Team in the summer of 2008. The team of ten spent two weeks at Santa Anita, and upon return all students' research and field data was compiled and a prioritized list of community needs was developed. After speaking with the junta directiva of Santa Anita, BUILD formulated, with their support, a four-part plan for overall community development to be realized starting in 2009.

Over Spring Break, four members of the BUILD Exec Team will accompany a new group of nine BUILD students to Santa Anita. The new team will be conducting research on a variety of topics, including the guerrilla reintegration process, racism and civil society, and rule of law in post-war Guatemala. As the new team familiarizes themselves with the people and places of Santa Anita, the members of the Team will work towards the completion of the 2009 Community Development Plan (CDP) with the junta directiva (board of directors) of the cooperative.

TOPSFIELD — Whether he's trying to renegotiate a loan with a foreign government or bring dozens of former guerrilla soldiers up to economic self-sufficiency, Mike Niconchuk's life is turning out to be, well, a bit revolutionary.

Niconchuk, a 19-year-old Topsfield native, has found himself in some unusual positions.

Mike Niconchuk, 2011, BUILD Program Co-Coordinator Mike was born and raised in the Boston, MA area. His parents met in the early 1980s in Guatemala, where his mom was a local medical school student and his father an American missionary. A classic love story ensued, and his parents moved to Boston after they married in the mid 1980s.

Some of the IGL’s most interesting and effectual endeavors arise from projects created by the eclectic array of student groups initiated within the Institute. The program summary, implemented in a standardized format for the first time in the 2007-2008 academic year, is intended to encapsulate the purpose, goals, and accomplishments of the student groups throughout the year. The program summary is as much a tool to encourage reflection and strategic planning within the student group as it is a medium to describe the group to the outside world, other students, collaborators, and donors.

Mass poverty is one of the world’s most pressing problems and daunting challenges. The compelling facts are well known:

• Over one billion people – almost one in five – live in extreme poverty, subsisting on less than a dollar a day.
• If the poverty line was raised to $2 a day, more than half of the world’s population would be living in poverty.
• Over 100 million primary school-age children cannot afford to go to school.
• Eight million people die each year simply because they lack the means to survive.
