Este video salio en el Canal 3 de Colomba, Guatemala en Junio del 2009. Explica la historia y el desarrollo del proyecto cafe en Santa Anita la Union. El proyecto es un esfuerzo de tres grupos: el Programa BUILD de la Universidad Tufts, CRS Guatemala, y la gente de la finca Santa Anita. El proyecto empezó en enero del 2009, y continuará hasta el 2012 mientras las nuevas plantaciones crezcan y la administración se fortalezca.

This original film features Mauricio Velázquez, community member of Santa Anita la Union, and his life as a young man in rural Guatemala. Poverty is the norm, and any source of income, even illegal sources, seems to offer a brighter future than the present.

Regional and Cultural Context

Tamil Nadu, our place of focus, is the southern-most state of India, a dichotomy of agricultural focus and rapid industrialization. The state has the highest number of business enterprises in India, with one of the highest literacy rates in the country. Despite significant development, increasing urbanization is producing an ever-widening gap between rural and urban areas in the areas of education, health care, and poverty. Historically, multiple empires have governed the area of Tamil Nadu, including the British, French, and Dutch.

Building Understanding through International Learning and Development (BUILD) is an interdisciplinary student-led program of the Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts University. BUILD seeks to educate and immerse students in the theory and practice of sustainable development by partnering with rural communities in the developing world to research and implement sustainable initiatives for human, social, and economic development.

Projects in Agriculture and Productivity

Agriculture is the basis of community livelihood, and therefore deserved primary attention. The envisioned agriculture projects required trained agronomists, and this we found in FUNDAP, a local NGO dedicated to business formation and rural development. With FUNDAP, BUILD and Santa Anita organized a one-year agriculture and organizational training program.

Projects in Ecotourism

Searching for ways to formalize and fortify Santa Anita’s nascent ecotourism program, BUILD students sought training in geographic information systems (GIS) and used GPS devices to map the entire farm, including every walking and hiking trail. BUILD also identified and photographed medicinal plants, birds, insects, and animals that can be found in Santa Anita, utilizing both the local knowledge of community members and the expertise of Tufts University faculty.

Misión de BUILD

BUILD es un programa estudiantil multidisciplinario, del Instituto de Liderazgo Global (IGL) en la Universidad de Tufts en Medford, MA, EE.UU. BUILD busca educar a sus estudiantes sobre la teoría y practica del desarrollo sostenible mediante la asociación con comunidades rurales en países en vía de desarrollo para investigar e implementar iniciativas sostenibles de desarrollo humano, social y económico.
