On Monday October 24th, The Poverty and Power Research Initiative (PPRI) held its first speaker event of the PPRI Speaker Series for 2011 revolving around the theme of "Media and its Relations with Power Structures". PPRI presented Mr.Fernando Berguido, a current Nieman Fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University, and publisher of the newspaper La Prensa in Panama. Mr. Berguido lead a discussion on Media in Latin America: Transparency, Special Interests and Accessibility.

The Poverty and Power Research Initiative (PPRI) is launching its Speaker Series on Corruption and Crises with Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy, who will be discussing issues of Corruption in Pakistan. Pervez Hoodbhoy is professor of nuclear and high energy physics, as well as chairman, at the department of physics, Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan. He remains an active physicist who often lectures at US and European research laboratories and universities.

As part of this year’s EPIIC Symposium, the Guatemala group presented their research on the “Governance, Wealth, Power, and Accountability” panel, the final panel of the symposium. The Guatemala research contributed to the dialogue on the framework in which poverty and all other global conditions unfold: the distribution of power and wealth.

As part of the Inquiry high school simulation program, the Guatemala Group presented their research findings in the opening night of the program. The presentation was an opportunity both to explain the variables and processes in Guatemala that relate to poverty and poverty reduction as well as a chance to share with students not yet in college what possibilities may exist for them if they were interested in pursuing such research as part of their future studies.

Guatemala Group goes to Washington DC

As a preliminary trip, the five members of the Guatemala Group traveled to Washington, D.C., to interview officials at the Guatemalan Embassy, the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), and the watchdog group, the Center for Global Development. These select interviews gave the Group members a better sense of the diplomatic perspective on the Millennium Challenge Account aid initiative. The trip came weeks before the MCC’s decision to grant or deny candidate countries Threshold funding for fiscal year 2008, so it was a useful time to be conversing with both the MCC and Guatemalan sides.

EPIIC Symposium On Global Poverty And Inequality

Mass poverty is one of the world’s most pressing problems and daunting challenges. The compelling facts are well known:

• Over one billion people – almost one in five – live in extreme poverty, subsisting on less than a dollar a day.
• If the poverty line was raised to $2 a day, more than half of the world’s population would be living in poverty.
• Over 100 million primary school-age children cannot afford to go to school.
• Eight million people die each year simply because they lack the means to survive.
