Rory Stewart

Rory Stewart was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Malaysia. He served briefly as an officer in the British Army (the Black Watch), studied history and philosophy at Balliol College, Oxford and then joined the British Diplomatic Service. He worked in the British Embassy in Indonesia and then, in the wake of the Kosovo campaign, as the British Representative in Montenegro. In 2000 he took two years off and began walking from Turkey to Bangladesh. He covered 6000 miles on foot alone across Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal -- a journey described in The Places in Between.

Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman was appointed Advisor (cabinet minister) in charge of the Ministries of Commerce and Education to the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh in January 2008, which he continued until January 2009. During his tenure, he was entrusted with the lead role in the political negotiations, which saw the successful return of the country to electoral democracy.

Resonating EPIIC's broad approach, an eclectic series of multidisciplinary programs are organized throughout the year, featuring art, drama, film, music and sport.

The Restless Conscience
EPIIC sponsored the U.S. premier of The Restless Conscience, a feature documentary film on the German resistance to Hitler from 1933-45 which was nominated for an Academy Award. The film was presented by its producer and director Hava Beller and followed by a discussion with Freya von Moltke, the widow of a leading figure of the resistance who was executed by the Nazis.

World-renowned street artist Shepard Fairey left his distinctive mark at Tufts on Saturday, braving the cold weather and high winds to put up a mural on campus. The visit was part of the 2009 EPIIC International Symposium on Global Cities and coincided with the artist’s upcoming gallery show at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA).
