Current Projects

Impact evaluation: All of RESPE's projects came out of community-expressed goals, so the group would like to establish a sort of impact evaluation to ensure that the projects are achieving what the community considers success, in particular, in the maternal health initiatives from the summer of 2010. This involves working with a member of RESPE: Balan to identify benchmarks and an appropriate way of evaluating them, as well as outside organizations also in the area.

RESPE: Balan's Projects

Past and Current Projects:

Teacher trainings: As a group they have organized trainings for local teachers by bringing teachers from Cap Haitian to hold workshops.
Legal status: RESPE: Balan has also been working to receive legal status from the Haitian government, which would allow them to expand their efforts in the community and make them eligible for grants, including USAID grants.

RESPE is comprised of RESPE: Balan and RESPE: Boston. These two groups are semi-autonomous, yet ultimately rely on each other to accomplish the mission of RESPE. The semi-autonomy allows each group to independently pursue projects in their areas in addition to joint projects such as the maternal health initiative project during the summer of 2010.

Join renowned photojournalist Ron Haviv at the ICP Museum for a signing of his book Haiti: 12 january 2010. In Haiti less than 24 hours after the devastating earthquake hit, Haviv was able to document the immediate aftermath. His photos bring us closer to the terrible experiences of the Haitian people. This project was a non-profit collaboration conceived by de.MO and The Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts University with VII to benefit Partners In Health and their Stand with Haiti campaign.

Located less than ten kilometers from Cap-Haitian, Haiti’s northern metropolis, Balan is a community of about twenty-three thousand inhabitants; a number much greater than the 1,325 that comprised the town’s total inhabitants in 1983 (information from DIRP bulletin vol. 3, 15 June 1983). Balan maintains commercial relations (formal and informal) with both Cap-Haitian and the country’s capital via its inhabitants, however it remains a community whose true identity is unknown by many, including the authorities.

RESPE Wins 2010 Davis 100 Projects for Peace Grant!

RESPE: Haiti will travel to Balan, Haiti during the summer of 2010 to implement a maternal health initiative with the $10,000 Davis Peace Project grant it was recently awarded. The Nesans Project, a collaboration between Tufts students and Balan community members, consists of constructing a sanitary birthing ward in Balan's clinic as well as facilitating maternal health trainings for the town's traditional birth attendants. The Haitian Coalition of Somerville, one of RESPE's Boston-based partners, is helping procure medical supplies and equipment for the maternal health ward.

- RESPE: Boston’s assessment trip. We listened to Balan’s priorities, which included health, education, and finance; met with community leaders; and established RESPE: Balan, which guides our research and identifies local resources and needs.

- We strengthened our Boston ties with our current partners, the Christian Haitian Entrepreneurial Society (CHES), Engineers Without Borders (EWB) at Tufts, the Haitian Coalition (HC), and the Tufts MPH Program.

Education Research Abstract

Education is often seen as a means out of poverty, a tool for empowerment, and a basis for building communication and social skills. In the case of Haiti, 65 percent of the population has no level¹ of education; 25 percent have a level equivalent to four years of primary education; 10 percent have a higher level. A little over half of primary school-age children are enrolled in school, and less than 2 per cent of children finish secondary school².

Members of RESPE: Ayiti; EWB; Linda Martinez, a Tufts Community Health professor; Douglas Glandon, a Tufts MPH alumnus; and Franklin Delambert conducted fifteen health-related focus groups in each of the Balan's six regions. Participants discussed ailments from malaria, typhoid, and parasites, to common symptoms, such as fever and headaches. They felt isolated from health services and information.

Other members, conducted research on commerce and secondary education.

Engineers Without Borders (EWB) joined RESPE to conduct soil and water tests.
