Fletcher International Business Professor Bruce Everett spoke to 30 Tufts and Fletcher students Thursday night on the prospects of fossil fuels in the 21st century. Everett, a Fletcher graduate and Fulbright scholar, has worked in the energy industry for almost 30 years, 22 of which were spent at ExxonMobil.

Some of the IGL’s most interesting and effectual endeavors arise from projects created by the eclectic array of student groups initiated within the Institute. The program summary, implemented in a standardized format for the first time in the 2007-2008 academic year, is intended to encapsulate the purpose, goals, and accomplishments of the student groups throughout the year. The program summary is as much a tool to encourage reflection and strategic planning within the student group as it is a medium to describe the group to the outside world, other students, collaborators, and donors.

World Energy Summit

A group of eight students traveled to the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The conference was attended by thousands of corporate executives and energy ministers from around the world and featured speeches by energy experts and world famous figures such as Prince Charles (via hologram), The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, former CEO of BP Lord Brown, architect Lord Foster, Steve Sawyer of the Global Wind Energy Council, the Presidentsâ€™ of Iceland and Djibouti, among others.

UK Trade Consulate

As a follow up to the conference, the UK trade consulate in Massachusetts brought three UK energy professionals to Tufts to discuss energy issues with members of the ESI. The consulate expressed interested in helping to facilitate collaboration between Tufts and the Imperial College of London.

The ESI hosted the 3rd annual Tufts Energy Conference. The conference consisted of three panels and three keynote addresses throughout the day, as well as a networking lunch. The event drew nearly 200 undergraduate, graduate students and industry professionals from the greater Boston area. The aim of the conference was to introduce students to career opportunities in energy and allow them to network with professionals. ESI co-sponsored the event with Young Entrepreneurs at Tufts (YET) and the Fletcher Energy Consortium (FLEC).

This past Saturday, March 29th, North Haven State Representative Steve Fontana moderated the Tufts Energy Conference panel discussing “Successful Maneuvering Within Policy Frameworks,” at Tufts University in Medford, MA. Fontana, the co-chairman of the Connecticut General Assembly’s Energy & Technology Committee, offered a brief introduction to the panel by examining the role of government in the energy market.

The ESI sponsored the Tufts chapter of Initiating Mutual Understanding through Students Exchange (IMUSE). The program was formed by a group of students from Harvard, Peking and Tsinghua University as a way to encourage cultural understanding leading up to the 2008 Olympics. The students sat on a panel along with four Tufts students and discussed the role of energy issues in the future of US-China relations.
