NIMEP is a non-polemical student think-tank and outreach initiative devoted to finding progressive solutions to historic conflicts in the Middle East. NIMEP provides a forum for productive dialogue, scholarship, and exploration of the region. The diverse group of individuals who spearhead this initiative are committed to contributing to future leadership and to inspiring others to realize the powerful results such a model of thinking and action can produce. The contents of this journal are the work of NIMEP members and academics.

NIMEP Student Delegation Departs for Kuwait and the UAE

Eight students from the New Initiative For Middle East Peace departed today for NIMEP's annual fact-finding mission, this year traveling to Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. The trip is an opportunity for these students to conduct professional-caliber research in a real-world setting. Each student will be producing a paper on the topic of their choice, ranging from a security studies look at tensions in the Persian Gulf to the current condition of medical education in the Gulf nations.

The Tufts New Initiative For Middle East Peace (NIMEP) is happy to announce the launching of its new student-run blog through the Tufts Roundtable. The blog will present student opinions on breaking news events, contemporary issues and topics, as well as summaries of our weekly dialogue sessions. Students will be encouraged to write about a topic of their own choosing, presenting personal analysis and offering policy prescriptions when applicable.

Ambassador John Limbert - “Negotiating with Iran: Wrestling the Ghosts of History”

A hostage for 14 months in Iran, Ambassador Limbert holds the Department of State’s Meritorious Honor Award, two Superior Honor Awards, and the Award for Valor. Before joining the Foreign Service, he taught in Iran, both as a Peace Corps Volunteer (1964-66) and as an English instructor at Shiraz University (1969-72). A career Foreign Service Officer since 1973, Ambassador Limbert’s overseas experience also includes tours in Algeria, Djibouti, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. From 1981 to 1984 he taught Political Science at the U.S.

Every year, NIMEP publishes this journal of student-written academic articles in order to add to the constantly evolving dialogue that seeks to promote peace in the most tumultuous region on Earth. This edition contains articles written by a diverse student group; authors come from all four years of undergraduate education at Tufts University as well as one student at the Fletcher School for Law and diplomacy. This issue highlights our latest fact-finding mission to Syria as well as primary research conducted in Israel, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

Some of the IGL’s most interesting and effectual endeavors arise from projects created by the eclectic array of student groups initiated within the Institute. The program summary, implemented in a standardized format for the first time in the 2007-2008 academic year, is intended to encapsulate the purpose, goals, and accomplishments of the student groups throughout the year. The program summary is as much a tool to encourage reflection and strategic planning within the student group as it is a medium to describe the group to the outside world, other students, collaborators, and donors.

Mass poverty is one of the world’s most pressing problems and daunting challenges. The compelling facts are well known:

• Over one billion people – almost one in five – live in extreme poverty, subsisting on less than a dollar a day.
• If the poverty line was raised to $2 a day, more than half of the world’s population would be living in poverty.
• Over 100 million primary school-age children cannot afford to go to school.
• Eight million people die each year simply because they lack the means to survive.

Policy Simulation: The Mid-East Dilemma

Professor Ronnie Olesker facilitated a policy simulation, of her own design, in which students assumed the roles of various actors throughout the Middle East and engaged in decision-making processes and negotiations, simulating those that occur in the Middle East today. The purpose of the simulation was to give students a better understanding of the various factors that influence policy and actions in the Middle East and the complexities of such decision-making processes.

"Lebanon After The Summer 2006 War: Student Research And Discussion

After a talk by Professor Abu Husayn of the Fares Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies, three students from the previous spring's NIMEP fact-finding mission in Lebanon gave presentations, including a video and audio presentation, on the trip and their research. Nancy Henry outlined the research she conducted on the challenges facing the Lebanese military. NIMEP members Nicki Sobecki and Tim Fitzsimons premiered their audio/visual presentation made up of hundreds of photos from the trip as well as informative narration.

Synopsis: Bilateral peace talks are often not productive. Engaging Syria might be a possible solution, although it might drive a strategic wedge between parties. The reluctance of the US to deal with non-state actors is an important obstacle in the Israeli-Arab conflict.

Benjamin Pogrund, Director of the Yakar Centre for Social Concern in Jerusalem and an IGL Scholar/Practitioner-in-Residence, delivered a talk on the current state of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and negotiations, as well as the manner in which the term "apartheid" has colored the debate. He largely built upon his own experiences in South Africa as a mode of comparison.
