The Joint Research Project is a program of the Alliance Linking Leaders in Education and the Services (ALLIES). ALLIES is an undergraduate led initiative at the Institute for Global Leadership that creates a bridge for shared understanding between future civilian and military leaders.

Reconciling Iraq Following up on "Iraq Moving Forward" from January 2007, The Institute for Global Leadership, IGL External Advisory Board Chair Robert Bendetson, and University of Massachusetts/Boston Professor Padraig O'Malley gathered leading senior Iraqis in Helsinki for three days of discussions on principles of future engagement.

The IGL's ALLIES program experienced a very successful surge this year with the infusion of INSPIRE Fellow Gregg Nakano. ALLIES (Alliance Linking Leaders in Education and the Services), the Institute's civil-military initiative, grew out of the IGL's long-standing interactions with the US Military and Naval Academies (starting as far back as the first EPIIC symposium on International Terrorism, when a delegation of USMA cadets participated with their professor, Augustus Richard Norton).

The Tufts Democrats and the Alliance Linking Leaders in Education and Services (ALLIES) deserve accolades for the symposium that they put on this past weekend. Devoted to discussion about civilian-military relations in the 21st century, the event featured a panel on the contentious issue of private military contractors (PMCs).

Using private firms to help fight a public war is not unprecedented, but the extent to which private money and manpower have been employed in the Iraqi conflict is certainly unique.

The Tufts Democrats joined together on Saturday with the Alliance Linking Leaders in Education and the Services (ALLIES) to discuss the military.

The Dems' third annual Issues of the Future Symposium consisted of four panels in Cabot 204. They all highlighted the "Challenges and Dilemmas of U.S. Civil-Military Relations in the 21st Century."

This Saturday, the Tufts Democrats, in conjunction with the Alliance Linking Leaders in Education and the Services (ALLIES), will host their annual Issues of the Future Symposium, "The Challenges and Dilemmas of Civil-Military Relations in the 21st Century." A plethora of speakers will address this most important of issues, and I encourage anyone remotely interested to attend and hear from the experts.
